The Niyamgiri hill range in Odisha, eastern India, is home to the Dongria Kondh tribe. Niyamgiri is an area of densely forested hills, deep gorges and cascading streams. The beautiful hand-embroidered shawls of the Dongoria Kondhs are associated with fortunes of matrimony. The cloth is called ‘Kapada Gonda’ or main cloth, embedded with colourful motifs on off-white ‘chaddars’ and are works of art. Due to the nature of the craft as well as it's cultural importance to the indigenous people, we have access to a limited quantity of the authentic hand-embroidered shawls. These shawls are exclusive pieces as they are hand embroidered by the women of the Dongria Kondh and can be considered as rare collector's pieces. The selection of cotton sarees in this collection have not been woven by the Kondhs themselves, but are inspired by their original art and have been created with handlooms by skilled artisans in Odisha that have been encouraged by the government to keep this art alive.
